CERVICAL SMEARSSmear tests are an examination of the neck of the womb (cervix) to check for changes, which occur before cancer develops. These changes can be easily treated in an outpatients clinic and cancer prevented. We strongly recommend that all women between the ages of 25 and 65 have regular smears unless advised otherwise by the Doctor. Reminders are sent out when smears are due, but if in doubt, please ask. Smears are very important, so even if you do not wish to have a smear (which is your right) please come and discuss it with the Doctor and don’t just ignore the letter. BREAST EXAMINATIONSIt is a good idea for all women to examine their breasts for lumps. If you are not sure how to do this, your Doctor or nurse will be able to show you. If you should notice any lumps in your breasts please see your Doctor. Most lumps are benign, but we would like to be certain all is well. If you fall between the ages of 50 and 64, you should receive a letter inviting you for screening as part of the national screening programme. Such mammography will take place at a local centre. Although after the age of 65, you will not automatically receive an appointment for routine screening, you may request screening every 3 years yourself. |
